Good (insert time of day) inmates!

How are you finding the week so far? Good I hope! Despite the recent negative things going on in the world right now. In particular my heart goes out to the ladies over in the US right now. The asylum is disgusted by what your supreme court has done. I’m not knowledgeable enough to comment on the details really, but I don’t really see a positive side right now. All I could think to do was write ‘Empires Fall’. Stay strong sisters! I’m having a little bit of a low one myself this week regrettably. I don’t know if that’s come across in the recent poems. I’m alright honestly, it’s just one of those weeks. It hasn’t stopped me writing and that’s the most important thing eh?

So, on to todays main event. The Harlequins writing music! I shared a clue for todays musical theme earlier on my social media pages. I’ve been trying to get more people (friends in particular) to follow me over on Facebook in particular. It seems I get more views from there than my other pages. Did anybody see the clue anyways? I thought it was a good one.

I mentioned the whole Roe v. Wade thing briefly a moment ago, and that may give you a good idea of our theme today. Todays theme is women. Female music artists to be specific! The fairer sex, as they say. They make up around half of the population of the world, so it stands to reason they’re equally as great at creating wonderful and thought-provoking music. I’m pretty much stating the obvious here because I think we all know about female musicians. It’s not exactly a bizarre concept. Haha! Opera singers, female rockers, popstars and a huge amount more. I’m going to try and share five of my favourite female artists here for you all to marvel at. No “girl bands” though. Certainly not a fan of those, just like boy bands.

With that said, join me as we delve into the musical minds of feminine artists the world over!

Joan Jett – I Love Rock ‘N Roll

Tarja – Until My Last Breath

Adele – Send My Love (To Your New Lover)

Babymetal – Da Da Dance

Amy Winehouse – Back To Black

And there we have it! Obviously there were countless possible options for this particular list from every genre imaginable. Not too easy to limit it to only five, but there you go. Maybe I’ll do another list on this theme in the future. That seems like a fun idea. I hope you’ve enjoyed my choices for this week anyway, let me know what female artists you guys really enjoy. I’d love to hear of some new ones.

So, let’s get the weekly shilling out of the way eh? As previously mentioned, I’m trying to push my social media sites a little bit. So, I have a page over on Facebook, an account on Instagram and a page on Twitter as well. Please consider following me over on those as well eh? Also, if you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well. Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Good day inmates!

And what a fine day it has been! The weather has been truly great the last few days. There were some heavy rainy spells over the weekend but it was never what I’d call cold. Loving the summer here at the asylum, that’s for sure. I’ve been a bit up and down in the happiness department, yet no real cause has occurred to me. It may have been clear from a couple of the poems in the last week. I’m dealing with it though, no need to be concerned. Madman is as madman does. Haha!

Speaking of being mad, want to hear some crazy music today? It’s the Harlequins writing music after all! Did anybody see todays musical theme clue? It looked a bit smoky, didn’t it? If you haven’t seen it, please think about following and liking me on my social media pages. I’ll be putting the links towards the end of the post as always.

So, today’s musical theme is industry! Yep. It’s one of those things that humanity can’t seem to do without, despite the potential damage that it can cause environmentally. Cogs and chemicals and electronics, we require the power of heavy industry to bring these things into our daily lives. They call it the force of progress. Without industry, you couldn’t drive a car, or fly in an aeroplane or even have much of the food that we eat. Granted many of the methods in these processes leave a lot to be desired, particularly on that final point. So what does this have to do with music? Well, like everything, there are artists that write about the nuts and bolts of machinery, of the dystopia of industrial excess and sometimes it can be as simple as producing a song that almost sounds like the hum of an engine or the beat of the factory floor. It wouldn’t typically be the kind of music I imagine you’d find in the pop charts and the like, but I say it’s still just as viable. Hell, there’s an entire genre called Industrial! Let’s see what I found this week eh?

Please join me as we delve into the musical minds of mechanised artists the world over!

Portishead – Machine Gun

Grendel – New Flesh

Mr Strange – The Cars That Ate The World

Dr. Steel – Lament for a Toy Factory

Avatar – Colossus

And there we have it once more! This list wasn’t actually very easy to come up with this week. It didn’t help that I lost a couple of the bands I had originally intended to include so I had to find some more! What a nuisance eh? Anyway, I hope that you all enjoy my picks for this week and that you go and give these artists some love. They all deserve the attention you know!

Speaking of attention, may I request yours again? As previously mentioned, it would be really swell if you guys could follow me on my social media sites as well as the blog. It would really help me out. The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account on Instagram and a page on Twitter as well! Links are included here! Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well! Cheers for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Hello there inmates!

How goes the week for you all so far? Very well I hope. I do still like hearing snippets from you all in the comments. It sort of puts a life to each “account name” if you get me. You all keep doing your thing and I’ll be here cheering you on from the interweb. As it happens, I’ve had a bit of a conflicted week myself. The weather has been pretty impressive an I’ve felt positive the majority of the time, I had a pretty hefty slump on monday. Despite most of the day being quite great, I spent most of the afternoon and evening feeling rather sorry for myself. Inexplicably sad and down about practically everything. I should point out that I don’t know why, it just hit out of the blue. I dealt with it in my usual way: sleeping. Come tuesday I was fantastic again. I don’t know what that was all about. So yes…

Anyways, let’s do something more positive eh? Music! Not depressing music! Todays theme clue wasn’t depressing at all, though wonder if it was actually discernible. I know that a clue is meant to be at least somewhat mysterious, but it’s a bit wasted if NOBODY gets it. Let me know if that’s not the case eh?

Todays musical theme is imagination! A pretty substantial tenet of the artist (among other things). That’s human creativity in a a nutshell. Imagination is pretty impossible to quantify I suppose. It’s a basic creative force that manifests in countless different ways in countless different minds. It creates art, it got us into space and into the clouds, it formed numberless savvy plans and it helps us in day-to-day life in ways we may not even notice. Again, it’s something that tends be synonymous with general thought, so it’s not often considered a ‘force’ on its own. I believe our imagination is what separates us from other creatures and it is what makes art so special. Things created out of thin air just for the sake of creating them. It’s part of what makes us believe we can achieve whatever we want. As I say, it’s hard to describe so this little ramble may be nonsense to most. That’s absolutely fine. That’s why I’m in the asylum. Anyways, want to hear some music about imagination?

Well, join me as we delve into the musical minds of ingenious artists the world over!

Abney Park – His Imaginary World

Owl City – Alligator Sky

Foster The People – Imagination

Poets Of The Fall – The Child In Me

And there we go! Another list completed and hopefully another round of artists you guys will decide to check out! I hope that these artists give off the message I’m trying to embody here. That almost undefinable aspect of human intelligence, the root of every drawing or piece of literature. The seed that grows into practically everything we know, at least in part. Please give these artists all a look, they deserve it. One of these is among my favourite artists ever, but I’ll let you guess which it is.

As for favourites, can I be one of yours? Social media pages, that is. I really want to grow my “presence” and it seems social media is the way. I’m yet to see that, but still. The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account on Twitter and a page on Instagram as well. Links will be included here, as always. Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well. Thanks for everything and thank you all for reading my work in particular.

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Good day inmates!

I begin writing this while I’m eating my dinner, so forgive me if I somehow manage to make some errors this week. How are we all doing today? Good I hope. I’m always genuinely asking that, I really do want to know what’s going on in your lives and creative forges. Please let me hear you! I’m doing good, I’m actually feeling generally more positive on most days. Life is actually pretty alright right now. I get the odd dark thought in the dark of night like many of us do, but I’m handling it. I know I mentioned briefly it last week, but I feel it bears repeating. I’m smiling, honestly.

Anyways, let’s move on from that. We’re here for music today after all! Did anybody see the clue today? It was a bizarre one, at least on the face of it. But if you thought about it for a moment, it was reasonably clear? Maybe? Possibly?

Ok, I’ll tell you! Todays musical theme is cheese! Oh yes, indeed. Now I’m not exactly talking about a literal block of cheese here. As wonderful as that would be, I’m talking about music of the cheesy and corny variety. I personally believe this was particularly prevalent during the 90s and early 2000s. I’m sure others could point to other areas of time as well and they’d also be completely right. I remember a great deal of cheesy and, perhaps cringe, songs from back then. The kind you’d have at a school disco. You know, dancey and upbeat but nonsensical at the same time. Lots of pop and lots of pizazz! The kind of song that gets stuck in your head for hours or days at a time. I accept no responsibility if that happens to any of you inmates here today. Haha!

So, with that said, join me as we delve into the musical minds of corny artists the world over!

O-Zone – Dragostea Din Tei

Eiffel 65 – Blue

Vitas – The 7th Element

Aqua – Barbie Girl

Smash Mouth – All Star

And there we have it! How is that cringe meter going? Mine is skyrocketing to be honest with you. Still, there is a perverse kind of joy that one derives from cheesy music. It’s easy listening I suppose. I hope that y’all check these groups out if you haven’t already heard these songs. I could have chosen so very many other artists, but I had to narrow it down. Let me know some of your cheesiest songs eh?

Speaking of cheesy, can I beg you to check out my social media sites? It would mean a lot to me! The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an Instagram account and a page over on Twitter too. Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well! Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Hello there inmates!

Happy pride month everyone! I hope everyone out there is able to enjoy the month as they should. I don’t actually know a great deal about pride, which is a little bit embarrassing. However, the asylum has always supported people being who they are, so there’s that. So, things have been pretty good for me this last week, workwise and in social terms. Despite the weather being rather changeable, I’ve been able to spend some time with friends a reasonable amount. To no surprise, this included the consumption of a fair amount of alcohol. Naturally. Life doesn’t currently suck.

So, did anybody see todays musical theme clue? It was a photo of a band that some of you may know. A band I have listened to since my early teenage years. Did anybody else get it? Heard the band? Guessed the band?

It was certainly not an unknown band. Even people who don’t typically like their particular genre have likely heard the name. Yes, that’s right! Todays musical theme is Rammstein! A metal/industrial band from Berlin in Germany. Though in the Deutsch tongue, their genre is called ‘Neue Deutsche Harte’, a subgenre of metal that is quite synonymous with Germany and Austria. Hell, I believe the term was coined by the press for Rammstein in particular. How do I begin even talking about these guys? They’re an eccentric bunch, to put it lightly. Known primarily for heavy guitars, unnerving visuals and pyrotechnics. Oh yes, the pyrotechnics! If you ever see a live video of Rammstein, just know that you’ll see almost as many explosions as you would in a violent video game. The lead singer (Till Lindemann) is even a qualified pyrotechnics engineer. Costumes, showmanship and rather amazing mechanical contraptions abound.

Speaking of the vocals, Till sings almost exclusively in German, with the odd bit of English thrown in on some songs. His rather baritone and commanding vocal style blends amazingly with the instrumental violence in the background. They cover some subjects that would scare other artists. From cannibalism to fascism, from sex to politics, from trauma to nudity; just to name a handful. I could go on about them for hours honestly, but I think this explanation has dragged on long enough don’t you? Let’s listen to some of their music eh?

Please my friends, join me as we delve into the musical minds of Rammstein.

Rammstein – Sonne (Live)

Rammstein – Feuer Frei!

Rammstein – Zick Zack

Rammstein – Mein Teil

Rammstein – Angst

Rammstein – Los

And there we have it! Yes I did indeed include a sixth song this week. I just had to you know? I know that perhaps the music of Rammstein won’t be to all tastes, but I urge you to perhaps look into the lyrics (Via translations) because I feel there is a great deal of mastery in the way they talk about various subjects. Some of which can be quite triggering, I suppose. They’re one of my favourite bands and I want more people to listen to them, not that they need the help of course! Haha!

I’ll include the link to their website here of course:

Speaking of websites, do you mind checking out my social media ones? I have a presence on Facebook, a page over on Instagram and also a page on Twitter. Please consider following me over on those too. It helps me out. Also, if you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well. Thank you all for everything!

Until next week, auf wiedersehen and have a crazy day inmates!

Hello there inmates!

Good day fellow inmates of the world! How are you all doing? Ultimately good I hope! Things have been pretty decent for me too. I’m having a good start with the new job and I am actually enjoying it. I know, it was a surprise to me too! Here’s hoping for a bright future eh? I wish I could say the same about the weather this week. It’s been diabolical honestly. Not cold or anything, but changeable to say the least. I got soaked the other day on a minor 10 minute trip. I was most tilted. I hope that all of you are having more luck in your respective neighbourhoods.

So, did anybody see the musical theme clue today? It was a pretty obvious one, I’ll confess. A fairly recognisable flag I’d hope. Go on, I’m sure you guessed it right!

That’s it, you got it! Todays theme is the country of Scotland! That most northern part of the United Kingdom. I’ve not yet been lucky enough to visit our northern comrades yet, but everyone I know who has say it’s simply beautiful. I’ve always wanted to visit Edinburgh and especially watch the yearly Edinburgh Tattoo (look it up, it’s so cool). The Scottish are a hardy people who seem to be reduced to a comedic stereotype much too often. All whisky, pubs and haggis. I daresay they’re not all that different from us southerners though. The highlands evoke a certain majesty that you don’t always get to see elsewhere in the UK and I think a lot of that translates to their music artists. It’s a picturesque land that just begs to be sung about. Like any other country though, the inhabitants like and create all sorts of music. For example, Calvin Harris and The Waterboys couldn’t be more different and they’re both Scottish. So, let’s see just how varied I can be today eh?

Please, once more, join me as we delve into the musical minds of Scottish artists!

KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See

Primal Scream – Rocks

CHVRCHES – Clearest Blue

Iona Fyfe – The Cauld

Alestorm – Keelhauled

And there we go! Not a Proclaimers song or bagpipe in sight! That’s not to say they wouldn’t be suitable choices I suppose. I think I got a good selection there, don’t you? I was surprised how many bands I know were in fact from Scotland. That’ll teach me won’t it? I hope you all check each of these artists out, they definitely deserve the attention. Slainte Mhath!

So, let’s get the shilling out of the way eh? I must say it would be wonderful if you would all come follow me on social media as well as here at the asylum. I have a page over on Facebook, an account on Instagram and even a Twitter page. I share my poems over there too, but I also share clues for my poems a few hours ahead of time. It’s good fun honestly. Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well! Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Hello there inmates!

I didn’t see you lurking there! How are you all doing? Having a nice week so far? That’s wonderful to hear! It’s been a rather eventful one for me too. I actually started a new job this week, which has given me the opportunity to get out and about a bit more. Hopefully make some new friends too eh? The weather has been absolutely bizarre. Thunderstorm after hot sun after rainstorm. It simply can’t make its mind up. It’s quite frustrating when you’ve got to travel by bike. Haha!

Anyway, let’s get on to the meat of todays post. The reason that you’re all here, theoretically. The Harlequins writing music! I always find it breaks up the week quite nicely, between my poems. A reprieve, if you will. Did anybody see todays theme clue? It’s a slightly harder one to explain if I’m honest. And potentially something of a red herring.

Todays musical theme is… high school! Or rather “high school never ends”. The clue I used today was from the music video of the Bowling For Soup song by the same name. Clever eh? But what do I mean by this one? Songs based around school wouldn’t be all that interesting after all. Well, no. Todays musical theme is more centred around showing you all a few of the songs/artists that I “started with” back in the day. The favourite songs and bands of my formative years. The music that has contributed to shaping my tastes these days. Angsty teenage Harley was a bit of a plonker, but present Harley has a lot to thank him for on the musical front. Want to hear some of the music that I listened to in my bedroom on my PC or iPod? Let’s try it eh?

Join me as we delve into the musical minds of past artists the world over!

Coheed and Cambria – Welcome Home

She Wants Revenge – True Romance

My Chemical Romance – Helena

Linkin Park – Numb

The Shanklin Freak Show – The Light Fantastic

And there we have it! What did you think of those eh? There were so many others that I could have included on this one, but I’d be here for eons. I may even ending up doing this theme again some time. So, from listening to these, you may be able to see how they have influenced my own writing style, creative endeavours and indeed this asylum as well. I really suggest listening to all of these, they definitely deserve the attention. It’s nice to look back and see how far I’ve come.

Speaking of nice, would you be to me? Maybe follow me on social media? The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account over on Instagram and even a page on Twitter. Please consider following on those as well, it really helps me out. Also, if you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well. Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Hello there inmates!

How goes your week so far? Exceedingly well I hope! Getting everything in your personal worlds done and dusted eh? I admit I had a bit of a slump early in the week, but that has since passed. I suppose posting poems like ‘Memento’ or ‘Remembering’ may have given my low mood away, but I assure you I’m rather good now. The weather here has been a bit schizophrenic as well, rain one minute then blue sky the next. Here was me thinking I belonged in an asylum, but I think the weather does more so. At least it’s been warmer!

Enough nonsense for now anyways. How about some music? The Harlequins writing music to be specific. Did anybody see the clue today? It was a good one I swear! You should have seen it! Oh well, you’ll get some music today anyways, I forgive you.

So, the theme for todays writing music is rather fabulous one! The theme for today is female empowerment! Oh yes indeed! This one is for all of those mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmommies! This was sort of inspired by the situation over in the US right now with the current abortion law fiasco. It has made me very sad to say the least, and after talking to a good friend over the pond, I wanted to show some form of solidarity with the good ladies who are having their rights threatened. Not only that, but there are some really good bops that can be centred around lifting up the ladies in your life. Many artists have written songs about how much they love their femininity, grace or maternal instinct. Songs about how girls can do anything that a man can do. Songs about a girls night out. I’m sure the list goes on! So, let’s see what I can come up with and hopefully I do you goddesses some justice eh?

Please, join me as we delve into the musical minds of feminine artists the world over!

Shania Twain – Man! I Feel Like A Woman

Alicia Keys – Superwoman

Iggy Azalea – Fancy

The HU – Song of Women

Stevie Wonder – Isn’t She Lovely

And there we have it! I know that this has been a slightly different kind of writing music post today, but I do hope that you all enjoy this one. Even without the nonsense going on in the US, I think it’s important to show love to the ladies in our lives, whether they be family or friends. Please check out all of these artists, they all deserve the attention. I feel like you may know the majority of these ones.

Speaking of showing love, mind if I steal a bit? Social media love that is! The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account over on Instagram and a Twitter page as well! Please consider liking me over on those sites as well. If you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well! Thanks for everything!

As always, have a very crazy day inmates!

Hey there inmates!

How is your day going? Well I hope! I’m having a much better day today, you’ll be happy to hear. A few of you lovely people sent some lovely comments after my poem yesterday. I’m never overly positive about my writing as it is but occasionally I have days where I’m particularly down on my work, and on that occasion I decided to “voice” it. Thank you for all the kind words, it really did mean a lot to me, however small it seemed. Other than that, things have been pretty satisfactory this last week or so. I’ve been getting out more and even got slightly touched by the sun. Summer approaches!

Speaking of approaching, you know what else is? Of course you do! The Harlequins writing music! I still find it rather profound that I’ve inflicted over 130 of these on you wonderful people. You’re rather understanding, aren’t you? Did any of you see todays musical clue? I think it was a less obvious one unless you knew the people in it beforehand.

Todays musical theme is a specific band: Apocalyptica! They are a band from Finland that are quite unique in my opinion. They are technically classed as a symphonic metal band, but unlike the bands I showed the other week in that theme, they tend to stand out. You see, other than a drummer, all of the band members play cellos. You’d think that this may cause them to sound rather homogenous and one-note, but the truth is far from it. I’m always amazed about the different sounds and styles these lads can get out of their instruments. I’m not particularly familiar with the instrument, but it seems rather versatile.

This is augmented by the presence of vocalists from a huge array of different bands that often feature in their songs. To name a handful, Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach, Lacey Sturm from Flyleaf and Till Lindemann from Rammstein! Oh yes, also Ville Valo, Corey Taylor and Franky Perez, among quite a few others. This gives the band an unprecedented range of musical landscapes to draw from. I also feel it means this band can appeal to almost anybody. I’m going to attempt to demonstrate this right about now. Are you ready?

Join me as we delve into the musical minds of Apocalyptica!

Apocalyptica – Path

Apocalyptica – Broken Pieces

Apocalyptica – I Don’t Care

Apocalyptica – I’ll Get Through It

Apocalyptica – House Of Chains

Apocalyptica – Bittersweet

And there we have it once again! Oh yes indeed, I did include a sixth song this time. Purely because there are so many songs of this band that I adore that I wanted to share a little bit extra. I really hope that you guys check this band out as they really do deserve the attention, they are so very talented. As always, I’ll include their website just below!

Here you go:

Speaking of websites, would you kindly visit my social media ones? The asylum has a page over on Facebook you know, there’s also one on Instagram and an account on Twitter as well! Please come follow/like me over on those as well! Also, if you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well! Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Does a headstone speak to you too?
Do you hear their voices?
Friends and family from beyond?
You’re not imagining it,

There is an energy among the resting,
A family reunion through cemetery gates,
A last chance at reconciliation,
Or chastisement,
Life lessons,
Spiritual advice,
Placations too late
And loving words missed,

It’s meditative,
The feeling behind you,
That is your ancestors behind you,
And they are your allies.

Heed it.
