No my friend,
That is not what rock bottom is,
My soul dissents,
Rock bottom is not crying and screaming,
Not tearing down the walls,

Rock bottom is laying prone at night,
Thinking instead of sleeping,
A prison cell only we can see,

Rock bottom is staring stony-faced at work,
Into the face of a furious Karen,
And not hearing a single squawk,

Rock bottom is sitting in your underwear at 2am,
Stuffing your face full of treacle tart,
And not enjoying any of it,

Rock bottom is not aesthetically pleasing,
Not a work of art,
It is not convenient,
It is suffering,
It is purgatory.

Hello again inmates!

Having a nice day? I certainly hope so. Me? Oh, I’ve been alright I suppose. Trudging along as I usually do, you know? I seem to be finding myself sleeping a whole lot more than usual. I daresay my new medication is to blame. I’m not exactly complaining, but it’s a little concerning. It’s early days though, It may well stabilise yet. It’s not even been a week. Think of me eh? Haha!

Anyway, enough of that nonsense! You’re here for some music, not for my whining! Who happened to see my clue today? Anybody? It was over on my social media. I hope somebody got it.

Well, todays musical theme is friendship! Oh yes! A very important facet of human life. Friendship and companionship. It’s something I’ve realised more-so in recent years. Even the most nihilistic and misanthropic of us needs others. Even if we deny it. We are social animals, so even the most miserable of us will suffer without any contact from other humans. This need for connection is a common trait in many artists music. It doesn’t have to romantic, they can be singing or writing about friends or even family. It could even be allies in a more distant sense. Many musical artists material can be dealing with joy of having friends around them, talking about the connections that friends have in a more metaphorical way or even missing a friend for whichever reason. It’s a rather broad subject once more. Let’s try and scratch the surface and get started eh?

I’m a gunner,
The standard demands my service,
A red banner expects the same crimson in payment,
Ram and sponge and shot,
Me and my crew,
We are demons this day,
Preparing the very mouth of hell,
A grand battery of the kings fire,

The thunder at our command,
Iron swelling with brimstone,
Those before us see it as judgement,
What once was a rural spectacle before us,
Is now a depiction of Gehenna,
I care not,
So long as the pieces keep singing,
And those roses sprout on the horizon.

Let me off,
My life has become this wheel,
I grow tired of this rotating farce,
Each and every rung is the same,
Cheap plastic and flimsy build,
Run round,
Run round,

The scenery never changes,
The same streets and bus routes,
The same grey skies and pained mornings,
Let me off this hamster wheel,
My rodent heart could burst,
Taken by the horror of the whole thing,
Chance would be a fine thing.

After trying these new sweets,
Compliments of the white coats,
I find my thoughts lying in a swamp,
Those little candies turn my mind to slop,
A marsh under kaleidoscopic skies,
But it’s for the best they say,
It’s for the best,
I sit in this swamp in my mind,
Unaffected by the brisk swill,
My eyes rolling in slow motion,
Rolling slightly to the sides,
A curious blur over my eyes like plastic,
I feel no remorse,
No misery,
Nothing,
But it’s for the best.

I do wonder,
What plays in the head of a dead man?
As all warmth finally fades,
What regretful dirge,
What orchestral round of applause,
A decapitation by piano strings,
A bowstring run across the jugular,
It’s all static cremating your brain,

The reaper hums a gloomy tone in your ear,
It’s an aural kill-switch,
As the lights finally bleed out,
Will it be an elegy for a lifes mediocrity?
Or a celebratory crescendo?
Either way it will be your final song,
And there shall be no celebration,
Only the void.

When we give ourselves to someone,
It’s like a beetle opening its carapace,
Exposing the soft underside,
The real you,
A pumping heart of emotions,
Passion coalescing with vulnerability,
The side of you that is more mammal than insect,
No more avoided gazes and nervous hands,

But nature is vicious,
It can all go wrong in a flash,
Human nature is an avian to your aphid love,
Like moths our wings can be plucked,
And like insects we can be squashed,
Under foot or in palm,
All that remains is cracked chitin,
And the fluid extract of a heart once loved.

And lo,
I find myself upon an iceberg,
Naked and secluded,
I checked myself into this purgatory,
Rapport and society are distant pirate coves,
The choppy seas are a chorus of mockery,
And it adores my laments,

This spit of ice,
Cut by the orca teeth of the past,
It’s a prison as well as a tomb,
A torture device of my own making,
I’m a seal lost to the world,
Sat in my own miserable fat,
And here I shall remain,

Until those poles begin to thaw.

Hello there inmates!

How are you doing this week? Drinking enough water? That’s great my friend! It’s been a bit of a lower week on my end unfortunately. Feeling far more up and down than my usual. Definitely not been having so much of a good time. I’m not going to go in to the reasons for this or anything, I’d rather keep it private. All I will say is don’t be too surprised if my works in the next little while are likely to be on the darker or moodier side. Just for a change right? I suppose that’s not overly unusual for this here blog, but still! Keep that in mind.

So, it’s time for yet another edition of the Harlequins writing music. Music is always the way to get across the voices and feelings in ones heart no? On that point, did anybody see the clue for todays musical theme? I posted it on the usual social media channels. Did anybody see it? Well, allow me to unveil what it was alluding to!

The musical theme for this week, and this may not be surprising given how I began this post, is sorrow and loneliness. Yep, we’re being a bit ‘Emo’ today. Sadness is one of the primary emotions that govern the human experience. It can’t be avoided really. As such, there is no surprise that countless artists over the years have written about the feeling of sadness and all the related elements of that. Depression, loneliness and self-loathing. These things and more are common elements in almost every music artists repertoire. Even the most dancey, most upbeat artists will still include a song about being sad about something. It’s just a fact of human life. I’m preaching to the choir a bit here I realise so how about we move on to the actual music? That’s what you’re here for eh?

So, join me as we delve into the musical minds of gloomy artists the world over!

Poets of the Fall – Carnival Of Rust

Echos – Vacant

Chord Overstreet – Hold On

Three Days Grace – Last To Know

And there we have it. Please try to hold your tears. I hope these musical choices don’t ruin your day or evening. These artists all deserve your attention, despite the more glum showings I’ve featured here. They are all really good. Here’s hoping you enjoy these artists and don’t feel too sad in general. Have a better week than me eh?

Enough of that, here’s some social media stuff. The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account on Instagram and an account over on Twitter as well. Please consider following me over on those pages, it really helps. If you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page. Cheers for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Creation is a messy business,
A butchers art,
Paint and ink and cloth,
Blood and sweat and tears,
The created takes a piece of the creator,
No art has existed without litter and plight,
The debris lies about as proof,

Scratches in the dark,
Spots of every prism soaked into wood,
Pencil sharpenings and empty mugs,
Burned out candles and the aroma of exertion,
A wasteland left by the authors hand,
The deed is done,
Your masterpiece formed,

But the mess remains.
