Hello there inmates!

Happy pride month everyone! I hope everyone out there is able to enjoy the month as they should. I don’t actually know a great deal about pride, which is a little bit embarrassing. However, the asylum has always supported people being who they are, so there’s that. So, things have been pretty good for me this last week, workwise and in social terms. Despite the weather being rather changeable, I’ve been able to spend some time with friends a reasonable amount. To no surprise, this included the consumption of a fair amount of alcohol. Naturally. Life doesn’t currently suck.

So, did anybody see todays musical theme clue? It was a photo of a band that some of you may know. A band I have listened to since my early teenage years. Did anybody else get it? Heard the band? Guessed the band?

It was certainly not an unknown band. Even people who don’t typically like their particular genre have likely heard the name. Yes, that’s right! Todays musical theme is Rammstein! A metal/industrial band from Berlin in Germany. Though in the Deutsch tongue, their genre is called ‘Neue Deutsche Harte’, a subgenre of metal that is quite synonymous with Germany and Austria. Hell, I believe the term was coined by the press for Rammstein in particular. How do I begin even talking about these guys? They’re an eccentric bunch, to put it lightly. Known primarily for heavy guitars, unnerving visuals and pyrotechnics. Oh yes, the pyrotechnics! If you ever see a live video of Rammstein, just know that you’ll see almost as many explosions as you would in a violent video game. The lead singer (Till Lindemann) is even a qualified pyrotechnics engineer. Costumes, showmanship and rather amazing mechanical contraptions abound.

Speaking of the vocals, Till sings almost exclusively in German, with the odd bit of English thrown in on some songs. His rather baritone and commanding vocal style blends amazingly with the instrumental violence in the background. They cover some subjects that would scare other artists. From cannibalism to fascism, from sex to politics, from trauma to nudity; just to name a handful. I could go on about them for hours honestly, but I think this explanation has dragged on long enough don’t you? Let’s listen to some of their music eh?

Please my friends, join me as we delve into the musical minds of Rammstein.

Rammstein – Sonne (Live)

Rammstein – Feuer Frei!

Rammstein – Zick Zack

Rammstein – Mein Teil

Rammstein – Angst

Rammstein – Los

And there we have it! Yes I did indeed include a sixth song this week. I just had to you know? I know that perhaps the music of Rammstein won’t be to all tastes, but I urge you to perhaps look into the lyrics (Via translations) because I feel there is a great deal of mastery in the way they talk about various subjects. Some of which can be quite triggering, I suppose. They’re one of my favourite bands and I want more people to listen to them, not that they need the help of course! Haha!

I’ll include the link to their website here of course: https://zeit.rammstein.de/en

Speaking of websites, do you mind checking out my social media ones? I have a presence on Facebook, a page over on Instagram and also a page on Twitter. Please consider following me over on those too. It helps me out. Also, if you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well. Thank you all for everything!

Until next week, auf wiedersehen and have a crazy day inmates!

Good day inmates!

Happy new year! I know it was a few days ago, but that was for everyone I hadn’t got the chance to wish well. I hope you all had some grand celebrations. I think you all deserve it after the last couple years eh? Did many of you have to nurse a monster hangover afterwards? I’m genuinely curious. I had a bit of a quiet one myself. Not due to lack of invitations, but rather a distinct lack of energy. As it happens, it was also my birthday on the 2nd as well. Happy birthday to me and all that. Another year closer to the grave eh? Haha!

So, it’s time for the first edition of the Harlequins writing music of 2022! I wish I could claim I’m going to do something special, but alas, not this time my friends. It’s going to be a pretty standard showing. I hope that isn’t the negative it sounds in my head. Did anybody see the clue earlier today? I quite liked that one as I’m rather fond of that kind of artwork.

Well, now for the “big” reveal! Todays musical theme is the macabre! I don’t know if you knew this, but the generally grisly, morbid and darkest things have informed much of my creativity for years. Poetry about the undead, monsters, death and yes, those darn serial killers. Sure, much of my work is political, philosophical, satirical or just generally wacky in nature but I find it hard to conceal my interest in the macabre. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but the darker aspects of the world and human experience are not to simply be shirked. They are as real and unavoidable as the reaper itself. Art is not always aesthetically pleasing. I watch a lot of horror movies and shows alright? It’s not my fault. So, want to hear some music inspired by the darker aspects of the mind? I knew you would!

So, join me as we delve into the musical minds of ghastly artists the world over!

Ghostfire – Vaudevillain

And there we have it once again! Some interesting artists there no? I actually tried to avoid the obvious macabre choice of just loads of gothic bands. That would have been a little too easy I feel. Cradle of Filth, Tiamat or Behemoth wouldn’t be bad choices if you’re into those kinds of bands. Also the Tiger Lillies and Creature Feature! I hope you find something that you enjoy here anyway. Check them all out, they all deserve the attention you know!

Speaking of attention, mind if I have some? I have social media sites you know! The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account on Instagram and a page on Twitter as well. Please consider checking out those pages for random stuff! Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page too! Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Greetings inmates.

I’ve got a short one this time. I promise it will actually be short this time. You see, i had an interesting idea the other day. I explained it to Lee and she seemed to think it was a pretty good idea, despite my inability at the time to explain it very well. My mind was quite literally all over the place. I must have been rambling like a lunatic again! I’ll try to explain it a bit better here today. You see, it’s an idea for a new segment for the blog. I believe segment is the right term for it anyway. A bit like my writing music segment, for example.

As anybody who has read my blog knows, WorldofHarley is an asylum for creative derangement and originative absurdity. I picture it as a literal insane asylum that holds my poems and stories, with the inmates milling about here and there. I’m not entirely clear where this thought came from originally, but it is how i view my blog for what ever reason. Anyway, my segment idea was going to be called something along the lines of “Asylum Escapees”. Each ‘chapter’, if you will, of this segment would surround a different music artist, writer or actor who is known for their eccentricity or unusual characters. For example, Marilyn Manson, Till Lindemann or HP Lovecraft. I’d basically write about how each of these people were a fictional asylum escapee and how they’ve escaped. I’d also use the same opportunity to write about what i love about them and their work, from the perspective of a fictional doctor.

I just wanted to try a different kind of writing while still keeping to my “style”, if it can be called as such. Variety is the spice of life after all. So, i implore anybody who reads to tell me if they like this idea and perhaps make some suggestions? Any and all thoughts are appreciated, as always!

Have a very crazy day inmates! Oh, and happy St. Patrick’s day!
