You approach the dark tower,
A megalith of private business,
Its ebony walls in stark opposition to the sky,
Projecting an aura of foreboding to the peasants around,
A display of power in masonry,
You hear squeals and barbarism from within,
You approach over a lava moat of taxpayer dollars,
Musk and oppression emanate in waves,

Distraught souls and suited gargoyles,
Spreadsheets and torture devices,
Demons with security cards,
Ritual performed across desks of oak,
Monsters behind obsidian partitions,
Above those ironclad gates,
There is a plaque saying thus,
“Town Hall”,

Armed only with a downcast gaze,
You put hands on that cold metal door.

I see you,
Supplicants and sycophants all,
Under those predatory spires,
Within ivory gothic monsters,
A church of destruction,

Did you know you stand on sacred land?
Not of the biblical kind,
But a boneyard,
As you kneel at your oaken pews,
You stand upon graves too,

This institution buried these bodies,
It ate them body and soul,
A temple of killers,
Justified by voices in your head and from the pulpit,
An ecclesiastical superiority complex,

You stand upon corpses,
You pray,
Looking up to ghosts of gods in the sky,
Prostrating yourselves to an absent father,
The rays in the clouds are just radiation,

Each skeleton is a sin,
Committed by the alleged unprofane.

I am bound to this place,
Consumed by these walls,
These offices of authority,
Branded with this name badge contract,
Fastened a bit deep to my chest,
I am to action this places will,
I am its blade and quill,
A rusty cog in an old machine,

Some serf comes before this department,
She comes begging for monetary salvation,
She will soon be homeless,
But we are no charity,
Too many have come begging today,
So the red stamp denies her,
Her tears a prayer to this place,
The doorman will remove her,

All in a days sweat,
Good enough for government work.

A counterpoint to ‘Extralegality’.

I heard some people are licking boots,
In their minds they are above the chaff,
So see their way of life as supreme,
Little armchair presidents,
Forming small gated enclaves,
Their arrogance is displayed in dollar signs,
Kneeling before those oil baron priests,
Don’t you dare be a scrounger,
Didn’t you know the poor deserve their plight?
If you just comply you’ll be fine,
They say through crosshairs,
Only a few bad apples among them,

You see my friend,
To speak out against these atrocities,
Well that is just the face of fiendish socialism,
Allegedly.

To the fat cats,
In their heinous smoking rooms,
Life and the world are games of chess,
They are kings and queens in boardrooms,
While the bishops are no more than shills,
Preaching their version of the rules,

On this globular chessboard,
We are all teak pawns,
Serfs to faceless chess masters,
The knights have already routed,
The rooks already crumbled to dust,
Mere vestiges of fair play,

We are thrown at each other with abandon,
Smashed into atoms,
All our colours becoming red then brown,
They play for their own ends,
They play with our lives,
There is no endgame.

Do the skies suck away compassion?
Because I see aviators without humanity,
Bomber crews without hearts,
Execrable souls within an iron demon,
Screeching along the zephyrs,
Where even angels fear to follow,

Does the pilot care for those his bombs flatten?
The lands rent by his payload?
I daresay not,
They simply cheer in patriotic tones,
Smirks underneath aviator caps,
Careless of the mushroom cloud in their wake,

They return to their air base sancerre,
And toast to the screams.

Hello there inmates!

I hope you’re all having a wonderful week. Mine has felt extremely productive, which is a very freeing feeling I must say! I’ve gotten the impression that my works this week have been a tad more “hard-hitting” than average. The epitome for me was “Domestic Bliss” which, as may be clear, was derived from real life experience and anguish. I was content with how it came out though and I hope you all enjoyed it.

So, it’s time for the Harlequins writing music! Any of you who happen to follow my social media may have already guessed the theme for todays post from my clue. I hope it wasn’t too obscure. So, the theme of todays music picks is rebellion. What is rebellion? The spirit of freedom and the will to ask questions, even against authority. Criticising your own government is one area that most think of when you hear the term rebel. The determination to be yourself regardless of those cupped whispers. It can be misconstrued as childishness at times I supppose, but that tends to be from people who seek to stand on you. This rebellious spirit has sparked many artists over the years, from punks to anarchists, from anti-establishment types to followers of particular politicos. These can span genres of all kinds and there are no shortages of artists to pick from.

So, let’s see what I have come up with. Do you agree with my ‘lower than layman’ take on rebellion? Or do you think I’m being overly vague? I think I’m still getting the hang of this. So let’s see which five artists we have today eh?

Join me as we delve into the musical minds of rebellious artists the world over!

Rise Against – Hero Of War

Rage Against The Machine – Killing In The Name

The Cranberries- Zombie

Eric Clapton – Stand & Deliver

System Of The Down – B.Y.O.B.

And there we have it for todays edition!

So, how about those choices eh? I’m hoping they displayed some rebellious spirit for you all to enjoy. There were a few others I toyed with choosing, but maybe they’ll appear some other time. I hope you’ve enjoyed my choices and that you check any of these artists if you’re unfamiliar, they all deserve it!

So, lets have some social media spiel! If you want to see clues for my poems and weiting music themes ahead of time, consider liking/following me over there! I have an account on Facebook, an account over on Instagram and last but not least a page on Twitter. Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me overĀ at the Ko-fi page! Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

These fanatic pitchforks I spy,
With waving flags they jeer,
With the blaming sabre,
And toxic forked tongues,
The wrong people broken under heel,
Be they the wrong colour or creed,

You dinosaurs believe your own haughty myth,
That your borders confine some element of superiority,
To simply resent the alien,
To hate the outside,
To hide behind a tattered mask of patriotism,
You have learned nothing from history,

You live in nations built alongside immigrants sweat,
You ignore your own history for spites sake,
Spewing lies forced into your veins by dangerous men,
Your self-serving devotion is weakness,
You don’t show strength,
You show fear.

At the centre of that distant empire,
Stands a citadel of a republic,
Clad in the angelic light of lady liberty,
The alleged disenfranchised of the nation,
They storm once ivory steps,
Led astray by conspiracy and bigotry,
Delusion turned into a destructive force,

Each step taken is a blow to democracy,
Each a bruise upon uncle sam,
These fools climb against their own nation,
Holding aloft standards bearing the name of a tyrant,
Red white and blue stained with filth,
A statue somewhere weeps,
Holding a flame growing dim,

A grim reminder of more barbaric times,
Across the world,
All eyes rest on the capitol,
An icon of justice defiled by hate,
And upon those steps once alabaster.

When sides are to be taken,
Political discourse disasters,
Or misunderstandings in partnerships,
Do we consider the other position?
Their feelings and humanity,
Is an opposite number still only a foe?

Is common ground a fictional nirvana?
Must a debate end in bloodshed?
Fingers in eyes and hair torn,
Noses and faces cut to make a point,
Hearts pierced with vocal convictions,
Potential friends lost in a tirade,

When disagreements are had,
The senate floor taken,
Must we destroy the contender utterly?
Can no knowledge be thrust bilaterally?
After all when all both sides offer is contention,
The entire world learns nothing,

Both sides can be devils.
