Good day inmates!

Disaster I say! Disaster! I’m feeling rather unwell this week. It’s not the great plague of 2020, don’t worry. Just a bit of a head cold. Seems to be going around a lot at the moment. Tis the season to be ill I suppose. It’s just making me feel rather run down and making my voice sound really low. Haha! It’s meant I’ve kept inside and working on my writing though, so silver linings and all that.

So, it’s that day of the week that I inflict the Harlequins writing music upon you all! You knew it was coming, don’t lie. So, todays musical theme is probably a bit of an obvious one given the season. The clue wasn’t exactly subtle. It’s Halloween! Samhain! Of course it is! My favourite time of the year, believe it or not! The voices in my head tend to enjoy it as well, so it keeps them quiet. I’m going to share with you five musical artists or individual songs that I feel embody this most spooky of festivals. From artists who dress up like monsters to heavy metal that personifies terror. I’m sure I can come up with a scare or two. Who doesn’t love a good scare eh?

So, join me as delve into the musical minds of ghastly artists the world over!

Faun – Halloween

Mr Strange – Lizard Man

Broken Peach – Tainted Love

God Module – Telekinetic

Aviators – Slasher

And there we have it! How about those songs eh? Some suitably scary tunes there to be certain. I hope these get you guys into the proper Halloween spirit. Check out these artists by the way, they do deserve the views, Halloween or not. I’ll still be sharing my poems over the weekend. The Harlequin doesn’t take a day off you know, not even for all hallows eve.

How about some social media links? The asylum has a presence on a number of sites on the world wide web. I have an account on Facebook, a page over on Instagram and even a page on Twitter! Be sure to follow me on those pages too! Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page! Cheers for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy week and a crazy Halloween inmates!

Hello there inmates!

How are you all doing today? Keeping this artistic forges burning hot I hope! That’s what I’ve been trying to do as well. Keeping my brain busy you know? Just trying not to let the thoughts stray too far into the darker regions. I’m back on the laptop this week as you may be able to tell. Using the WordPress app to write last weeks edition was something of a needless struggle, so I resolved to stick to the desktop version this time. I’ll be curious to hear the thoughts of everybody on that. Anybody else create their blog posts using the app? Or is that a cardinal sin?

So anyway, on to the music for this week! Did anybody get the clue for todays’ writing theme? It was a fairly evident one honestly. It was a picture of a television. So what can we deduce from that? Well, it’s not as abstruse as it could be. I’m not clever enough for that! Haha. Todays theme is simply any music that relates to television or the media. I may or may not include theme songs in there. I haven’t decided at the stage of writing this section. Music and TV go hand-in-hand as you would imagine, you can’t really have captivating television without any music right? So many shows are recognised only on the first few notes of their theme songs. One that always sticks with me is the beginning of the Simpsons theme. On a completely different note, some music talks about the negative effects that too much screen time can have upon the human psyche. Or the effects of advertising and commercialism. Again, I seem to keep going on tangents like this don’t I? Let’s just get some music going please!

So, join me as we delve into the musical minds of televised artists the world over!

Dire Straits – Money For Nothing

Jake Shears – Do The Television

Frog Leap Studios – Pokemon Theme (Cover)

Eisbrecher – Was Ist Hier Los?

Jenna Russell – Red Dwarf

And there we have it for another edition of the Harlequins writing music! What do you think? Do you think I had a reasonable variety of television-oriented songs here? I particularly enjoyed including a couple theme songs in there. That last one is a particular favourite of mine. The show is great as well. I hope you check out all of these artists as well. They all deserve the esteem to be honest!

So, let’s be having some social media spiel! The asylum has a presence on a variety of social media platforms. I have an account on Facebook, an account over on Twitter and it also has a page on Instagram. Please consider following and subscribing me over on those pages too. I share clues for my poems a few hours ahead of time. It’s all a bit fun you know! Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page! Thanks for everything!

Until next week, have a very crazy day inmates!

Hello there inmates!

How are you doing this week? I know I ask that into space each week, but I am genuinely curious how any readers are doing. I’ve been a little on the low side myself this past week. I’m dealing with it, but It has made me realise how isolated I am at times. I’ve been finding myself not getting out of bed and being productive most days unfortunately. My brother in particular has been there for me a lot though. I’m not exactly sure why I’m being so whiney and candid about this but yes. I’m extremely lucky and blessed to have the family and friends that I do. They’re the best and I shan’t forget that!

Anyways, on to more compelling subjects eh? Music! Oh yes! Everyone loves music! It’s part 104 (bloody hell!) of the Harlequins writing music. Todays musical theme is one I threatened to come back to a few weeks ago. Did anybody get the clue earlier on today? I can’t imagine it was a very straining experience. Today’s musical theme is, once again, Europe!

Yep, I did cover this a few weeks ago but I said at the time that I couldn’t possibly cover the musical range and variety of the continent in five songs. I only showed off five nations of the 44 (I think) present on the continent. Only five artists doesn’t cover the many distinctive nations over here. I’m not going to cover the UK in these by the way. Purely because I feel I can easily create a separate list for British artists as a theme. So anyways, the home of the European Union and of innumerable distinct culture groups. As I would have mentioned last time, this continent has a long and rich history. Borders have shifted, names were changed and cultures have clashed. It’s one of the several melting pots of the world, so of course music has morphed in a multitude of directions. I think I’m likely to just keep rehashing that same point if I keep on so let’s see which artists (and nations) I’ve got for you this time!

So, join me again as we delve into the minds of Eurocentric artists the continent over!

The Dubliners – Whiskey In The Jar
https://www.facebook.com/thedublinersofficial

Skaldowie – Z Kopyta Kulig Rwie

Fuel Fandango – Toda La Vido
https://www.fuelfandango.com/en/

Within Temptation – Angels
https://www.within-temptation.com/

Avicii – Wake Me Up
http://avicii.com/

And there we have it once again! Some pretty distinct artists there eh? There was even one (I’m not saying which) that I had actually forgotten was from a European country. Silly me! I hope you check out all of these artists all the same, they all deserve the love. Let me see those guesses as to which nations these wonderful artists hail from.

So, here’s some social media spiel. The asylum has a page over on ever-reliable Facebook, an account on Instagram and a page over on Twitter. Follow and subscribe to me over on those too eh? Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page. Cheers for everything!

Until next time, have a very crazy day inmates!

The mists of the village welcomed a new visitor,
A monk of the road,
Tsugaru shamisen in hand,
Ragged in his very being,
Skeletal and mute,
A man whose eyes had never seen,

He played for rice and water,
His instrument his only possession,
Aside from the soiled cloth on his back,
The shamisen continues its mournful twangs,
Each pluck unleashing a tale of spirits,
Mystifying the villagers in its sad tones,

The old monk persisted,
With his music magic seemed real again,
Not a single eye remained dry,
Even the skies above acknowledged his rueful tune,
Falling in dismal sheets,
The village walked beside spirits once more,

And the shamisen continued its mournful twangs.

Hello again inmates!

Having a nice day? I certainly hope so. Me? Oh, I’ve been alright I suppose. Trudging along as I usually do, you know? I seem to be finding myself sleeping a whole lot more than usual. I daresay my new medication is to blame. I’m not exactly complaining, but it’s a little concerning. It’s early days though, It may well stabilise yet. It’s not even been a week. Think of me eh? Haha!

Anyway, enough of that nonsense! You’re here for some music, not for my whining! Who happened to see my clue today? Anybody? It was over on my social media. I hope somebody got it.

Well, todays musical theme is friendship! Oh yes! A very important facet of human life. Friendship and companionship. It’s something I’ve realised more-so in recent years. Even the most nihilistic and misanthropic of us needs others. Even if we deny it. We are social animals, so even the most miserable of us will suffer without any contact from other humans. This need for connection is a common trait in many artists music. It doesn’t have to romantic, they can be singing or writing about friends or even family. It could even be allies in a more distant sense. Many musical artists material can be dealing with joy of having friends around them, talking about the connections that friends have in a more metaphorical way or even missing a friend for whichever reason. It’s a rather broad subject once more. Let’s try and scratch the surface and get started eh?

Join me as we delve into the musical minds of friendly artists the world over!

Adam Lambert – Better Than I Know Myself

FRND – Friend

Randy Newman – You’ve Got A Friend In Me
http://www.randynewman.com/

Tenacious D – Dude (I Totally Miss You)

And there we have it! How was that one? Lots of bro-tastic and friendly songs there eh? I hope that you give each of these artists a good look, as they all deserve it. Go and check them all out. They each have lots of phenomenal songs in general. Listen to them with your friends eh?

So, let’s have some social media nonsense. The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account over on Instagram and a page over on Twitter. That lyre,
Apollos hand-me-down,
An instrument of antiquity,
That sound,
Each tone more shrill than the last,
Thundercracks across string,
I hate it,
I hate those aural pangs,

They scrape across my cranium,
Nails upon chalk,
Leaving invisible scars,
There is nothing divine about this sound,
No virtue from its turtle shell frame,
It is a miserable dirge of angst,
Plucked free by the fingers of demons,
Inflicting naught but malady.
