Hello again inmates!

Well, it’s finally over for another year eh? The day came and went by without a hitch. Despite my previous ‘grinchery’, I hope that you all had a wonderful time with your friends and/or family. You all deserve it after the last few less-than ideal years eh? I feel for anybody that had anything less than love in these cold months. I did have a good time as well, believe it or not. I went to my parents house and ate and drink far too much. It was a really merry time and I will cherish it. I’m still not a fan of Christmas though, don’t get me wrong. I also finally have a recent photo with my mum which featured in my poem on Christmas, which is surprisingly rare believe it or not. Oh I do love her so much. I’m not being soppy, you are! Shush!

Moving swiftly along, did anybody see the clue for todays musical theme? It was a bit less of a clue than usual, as it was just a picture of my ugly mug. It was over on my social media sites, which I hope that you would all consider liking/following me over on those.

Todays musical theme is… well… it’s me. Sort of. With the new year fast approaching this weekend, it is usually a time for reflection and this will be along those lines, in a way. This has been an interesting year for me. I would say the asylum hasn’t exactly grown this year, but it’s not shrunk either. So I guess that’s good right? I’ve successfully managed to post a poem (or writing music post) every day this year, barring any issues before new years day. This is an accomplishment that has been a source of pride and utter panic all year. I also successfully didn’t die or become homeless during the year. Sure, I still have been suffering with depression and anxiety (Haven’t we all?) but it hasn’t won so far. There was one major positive a few months ago. I actually had a poem featured in a two-page spread in a well known UK writing magazine, conveniently known as ‘Writing Magazine’ which was something I never dreamed of happening. Maybe it’s a positive sign for the new year? So with that nonsense all said and done, who wants to hear some music? I’m going to share five songs that particularly stood out and inspired me this year. Let’s see what I come up with…

Please join me as we delve into the musical minds of artists chosen by me from the world over!

Late Night Saviour – Devil

Postmodern Jukebox – Royals (With Puddles)

Ghost – Spillways

ANY ROAD – Megalith

Jain – Makeba

And there we have it! Quite a strange mix there this week isn’t it? There have been so many artists that I either listened to or discovered this year, it was impossible to include everything. I do hope that you check out and enjoy the artists that I have chosen this week anyways. To think, it’ll be 2023 when I create another one of these lists. That’s a scary thought. Here’s hoping to see you here again for that!

Speaking of seeing you, would you mind seeing me? Or rather see my social media stuff? The asylum has a page over on Facebook, an account on Instagram and for the time being, a Twitter page as well. Please think about bestowing me with a late Christmas present and follow/like me over on those sites. Also, if you really enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over on the Ko-Fi page as well. Thanks for everything!

Until next week (and next year!), have a crazy day inmates!

You gave us life,
Between the both of you,
Now a troika you are,
Mother Father and Stepfather,
Your love has always been capital,
Shoulders always ready for tears,

A beginning of blood and pain,
And then decades,
Bearing us through barbs and salt,
Holding us,
Feeding us,
Supporting our hobbies,

I could not list your accolades,
There are not enough hours,
But on this day of family,
Please allow me to state,
Thank you to my parents,
For all you do.

The party is over,
The feast and potations are consumed,
Only crumbs of crackling and wine vapours remain,
The bodies have scarpered,
And now comes the crash,
And plunge you shall,

Fatigue comes like a plague,
The joy from before feels like a dream,
Yesterdays consumption has become a force of gravity,
Roast beef like boulders on each eyelid,
The sofa is your workbench for the day,
And post-revel debilitation is todays vocation.

This table holds years,
Connections soaked into its timber,
As well as generations under its side,
Saturnalia has brought us all here,
Grandparents to parents to siblings,
Matriarch at the head as is expected,
She feeds us like she holds us together,
Roasties and more variety than a butcher,
We’re all together,
As one,
As a family,
Around this table.

All is quiet and pure under the christmas lights,
Families finally resting their heads,
With the younglings awaiting he in the red coat,
But be sure they are deserving,
Or they invite the Krampus,
The dark element of the holiday season,

A mountain of matted fur and goat horns,
Eerily shrieking basket upon his back,
Hooves upon the perturbed snow,
He likes to punish those bad boys and girls,
The ones who spit and mock the infirm,
And purloin them from their sobbing sires,

So young ones,
You better be good,
Show respect and eat your greens,
Or he’ll chase you giggling all the while,
You won’t be spared the birch rod,
And be whisked away by cloven hoof.

‘Tis the holiday season once more,
Can you hear the bells?
A chorus of Christmas cheer,
A symphony for everyone,
The winter festival of joviality is come,

I can hear it already,
The echoes of familiar voices,
The gaiety of family and friendly ovation,
The scent of turkey and bad television,
Brussel sprouts and too many liquors,

A time of togetherness,
Of forgetting this beast of a year,
The pine tree stands ready against the annual grinch,
No humbugs allowed here,
Merry Christmas to all!

Hello there inmates!

I hope that you’re all having a great day. Hell, I hope that you’ve had a great week! I’m feeling much better from my little tummy bug last week. In all honesty, it had mostly dissipated by friday afternoon. Still, it was far from fun. It gave me an excuse to write in bed though, so there was one plus. I’ve been quite happy with the poetry this week. I really tried to push the envelope and I hope it showed!

So it’s now Mid-december and Christmas is not very far off at all. Does this mean that today’s post will be dedicated to Christmas? I’m afraid not my friends. Try as I might, I simply cannot bring myself to enjoy pretty much any christmas song. I think years of working in the retail sector have numbed me to them. I just find them too similar to one another. So today’s showing of the Harlequins writing music will simply display five artists to act as creative lubricant for us all. Bah humbug and all that!

So, without further lingering, join me as we delve into the musical minds of ‘strictly-not’ christmas themed artists the world over!

Season Of Ghosts – How The Story Ends

Black Light Burns – Lie

The Weeknd – Save Your Tears

Example – Changed The Way You Kiss Me

The Police – Message In A Bottle

So there we have it for another rendition of the Harlequins writing music!

So, that’s a pretty curious selection is it not? I hope that you give them all a gander and hopefully enjoy them. Sorry for the link for Black Light Burns, for what ever reason their website is gone. Youtube, Spotify and Facebook may be your best bets there. So, you see, no need for christmas music eh? We can have a perfectly grand musical journey without a holiday wish! I do hope that everyone has a great holiday season regardless! Just don’t expect a Oldschool Harlequin brand of mulled wine any time soon.

Now for a bit of a social media spiel. The asylum has a prescence on several sites. I have a Facebook page, an account on Instagram and a corner on Twitter. Also, if you enjoy what I do here at the asylum, please consider supporting me over at the Ko-fi page! Thanks for everything!

You never know, it may be something different next week (insert inconspicuous wink here)! Until then, have a very crazy day inmates!

Greetings fellow inmates!

Well, I’m not going to be posting anything for a few days now. It is Christmas very soon after all and I’m going to be spending it with my family (No computer down at their place anyways). Then after that, on boxing day, I’m going to be going to stay with Lee for a while. I’m most likely to be back here around new years. I may attempt to post something while I’m at Lees but i can’t really promise anything as I’d quite like to spend the time with her. So yes, there’s that. Don’t expect any blog posts until around new years. Sorry about that.

I’ve had a great time with the blog so far. This blog has really surprised me, it seems to have really shot off. I’ve only had this blog for a few months and already i seem to be gaining quite a few views and followers and such. I won’t post any numbers or statistics or any crap like that as that comes across as a bit self-indulgent to me. This makes me really quite happy as i never expected anyone to actually enjoy my work. So thank you to each and every one of you out there who has taken the time to read my posts and follow the blog. I love you guys! Hehe! I will surely continue with my posts again as soon as I’m back home.

Now, i wish everybody a very happy Christmas and a crazy-ass new year!

Best wishes from the Oldschool Harlequin.
