Ding ding,

A doorbell death knell,
My pulse surges like a cauldron,
A gasket ready to blow,
There is an invader in our midst,
A revenant with a kindly face,

Knock knock,

The door chants to me,
The palpitations begin their dance,
This perpetual state of foreboding,
It’s a disease of the mind,
Why do you want to see me?

Ring ring,

Outside there are foes,
Demons with torches and pitchforks,
Wielding such threats as hellos and good mornings,
Casting dark spells with waves and smiles,
Don’t let them in,

Beep beep,

Friends call up from outside,
I retreat to my duvet,
I don’t belong in that society,
Why else would I shiver at their presence,
And shield my eyes from their azure skies?

This world is indeed a carousel out of control,
Run on chemical disasters and hominid mistakes,
Fuels of chaos,
Colours and shapes that don’t fit,
A turmoil our minds were not designed for,
Dulling and stress-testing our mental blades,

But on this day of mental health aid,
I proclaim to you that you are alone,
Let my words built of granite support you,
Bolster your barricades and direct your first footfall,
A whetstone to sharpen your confidence,
Enabling you to cut down your demons,

Whichever torment has assailed you,
Many others shall be whetstones for you as well,
It is a global blight,
You need only reach out,
Scores of angelic blacksmiths ready to assist,
There is no need to suffer in silence,

Please.

I’m a man of words,
But not of talking,
Not of tongues,
If I attempt it,
My throat gains an eerie rasp,

When I behold you,
I try to sweetly exalt,
The words in my mind,
Cradled in lilac and sugar,
Flying on wings of cherubs,

But the words inexplicably contort,
Into an unearthly sound of breath,
Of hellish design,
My tongue rebels,
A shrill auditory talent show,

I appear a banshee,
Spewing screams,
All nerves and sinew,
A nonsensical wheeze,
No longer angelic,

My eyes gaping,
Your answer so desirous,
Yet also apocalyptically alarming,
It could make me rasp,
It could kill me.
